Done

My favorite word at the moment. I’m glad the class is over. My goals for each course are simple – learn something new and get a passing grade. I’ve learned a few new things in CECS5210. Not sure about the passing grade. Give me a “C” and we can call it good!! What I learned was primarily about all the free open source software available and not so much about instructional design.

This is my second course with Dr. Warren and even though I got an “A” in the first course I can say honestly that I don’t look forward to more classes with him. He tends to be disorganized and chaotic. I’ve come to think he intentionally gives vague instructions because he believes in some sort of chaos theory of learning. I wouldn’t mind the meetings he insists of having in Second Life and World of Warcraft so much if our meetings actually had a purpose. We always end up in these environments watching some avatar walk around while we continue to use text chat. If you want to convince me that SL and WOW are really learning environments than I need you to show me. Conduct a lecture or do something meaningful with the course that can only be done with those environments and then I will be impressed.

To be fair my attitude towards school has soured over the last several weeks. As a result I’ve decided to take a semester off and try to get back to a happy place about school before I go any further.  After some time away maybe I will feel differently.

On a slightly different note:

I did start a wiki as part of an assignment for CECS5200. Turns out I sorta enjoyed doing it and I intend to keep going. If anyone is interested here is the link:

Getting Started

August 26, 2008

Well I’ve read lots of blog posts but until now I’ve never bothered to create one of my own. I guess these classes at UNT are going to force me to embrace some of these new fangled web technologies!

I don’t have anything against blogs and chat and other web based technologies. I’ve been doing web development for the past 10 years. When I see a blog site my first impulse is to think about how the site works from a programming point of view instead of focusing on the content of the blog.  To me creating a blog site is more exciting than simply posting content. Posting content is an end-user function and beneath a developer!!  Actually blogs have saved my bacon several times and it is about time that I start sharing my own experiences.
